Storytelling In AR
This course explores the blending of physical and digital worlds through augmented reality (AR). Students will be introduced to different AR technologies and the possibility of narrative storytelling and artistic expression through AR filters. This course examines the possibility for use of AR in traditional art spaces and galleries, as well as the expansive capabilities for making personal and political statements through digital media, out in the world.
Project: AR Portrait
Students were tasked with creating a complex moving portrait using a static target image and time based elements expanded into space. For this assignment, students were challenged to think critically about the complexity of human identities utilizing illustration, animation, video editing, and audio.
Project: Artificiality
For this assignment, students were challenged to think about artificiality in digital and physical space through a critical lens. The project utilized photogrammetry, basic 3D modeling, and use of a moving element (either animation or video).
Imaging
This course introduces digital imaging and digital illustration. Foundational technical methods and semiotics are introduced as ways to explore contemporary visual language. Students will understand the digital creation and deciphering of images in 2D space.
Project: Typography Portrait
Students were asked to create a portrait of a digital artist using text as the primary element.
Project: Speculative Advertisement
For this assignment, students created an advertisement for a speculative piece of technology. They were challenged to think critically about the conditions of a future world that might necessitate a proposed piece of technology. Later iterations of this project utilized AI generated images that were manipulated and edited into an advertisement.
Time
The Time course introduces the fundamental concepts of time-based media, with an emphasis on audio and video production/post-production. The course covers the basics of recording, filming and editing. The conceptual angle of the course involves a critical look at our world. The technical skills were utilized in conjunction with critical concepts resulting in creative expression.
Project: Reality Shift
Students demonstrated their cumulative video and audio skills in an experimental piece of video art that contemplates the concept of reality. Students were asked to reflect critically on the ways that reality shifts occur. They created 2 minute videos utilizing multiple layers and composite effects, and edited audio to fit with their narratives. Videos submitted for this assignment are eligible for curation into a public student video program I am putting together in the spring of 2023 in partnership with the nonprofit arts organization Denver Digerati.
